Bass Clef – Inner Space Break Free

09.05.11

With 90% of dance music producers tripping over themselves to make the most forward thinking music possible, Bass Clef has come with Inner Space Break Free; looking over his shoulder ‘‘To the tunes, DJ’s, soundsystems, noisy neighbors and pirate stations that have inspired me and repeatedly turned my head inside out over the last two decades.’’ The 12 track album is “an open love letter to underground dance music culture” where influences are less worn on sleeves, but rather emblazoned on foreheads.

Loosing the dubstep tag of previous productions, Bass Clef takes a foray into all things 90s; from the opening chunky rave anthem “I think you are ready now for the eternal point of no return” to the insane jungle breaks on “North London Fire” and “Yrheartmyheart” and back to fusing slow burning house and 90s techno on “Everyone I know” and “Still No Government”.

There’s a very personal feel running through the album, almost like a cherished memory, with tracks like “Break Free” and “Memory Closer” being the soundtrack to the vague flashbacks to the free party the night before. There’s also a brilliant attention to detail that really ties the tracks together, more so than recent cheesy attempts made by Chase & Status or Toddla T.

Below are two tracks for download from the album; “Memory Scars” is a spaced out bassy cut populated by drum machines and a glitched out female vocal sample. “I think you are ready now for the eternal point of no return” is a slower throwback with chunky rave chords and some super slo-mo breaks.

The album is out now on Magic + Dreams on Cassette with MP3 codes; you can buy a copy here at the Punch Drunk store. Also worth keeping an eye out for is Bass Clef’s 12” for Punch Drunk later this year.

“to all the haunted ravers
Going out to all the journeyhome headphoned
(memory vagues and whirpools / you can’t remember and you can’t forget)
all massive and crew inside the place
come and escape to inner space”
