For anyone who was raised in the ’70s, never had a date in the ’80s, and believed 2000 was going to look like a cross between an LSD trip and Tron, Omni magazine was essential reading but sadly these days the only place you’ll be lucky enough to find a copy of Omni for sale is in charity shops or for lucrative prices on eBay. For those unfamiliar, the magazine was a lushly airbrushed, sans-serif, and silver-paged vision dreamed up (surprisingly) by Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione and his wife, Kathy Keeton that ran between 1978-1995. It split the difference between the consumerist Popular Science, and the lofty Scientific American available at the time and is said to be “an original if not controversial mixture of science, science fiction, fantasy and the paranormal”. Now the team have created Crack the Surface, a series of short films following Silent UK as they probe through the unseen and off-limits. Creating covers for several labels and brands including the likes of Hyperdub, Warp, Planet Mu & Red Bull Music Academy, his artwork has graced the covers of some of the most elegant releases of the past half decade. Often recurring to sophisticated geometric and repetitive patterns, Optigram’s artwork reflects the same experimental analogue niche sprouting from these labels. Haven been responsible for Ikonika’s iconic cover, and DVA’s brilliant new ‘Pretty Ugly’ LP cover, Optigram is proving to be one of the influential designers within the electronic music scene. Red Stripe – Make Something From Nothing Trailer

Make Something from Nothing, the first of a series of cultural projects called ‘Make with a Red Stripe’, features a unique sound sculpture created by sound artist Yuri Suzuki, in collaboration with DJ Al Fingers, singer/songwriter Gappy Ranks and designer Matthew Kneebone. Red Stripe launched the awesome sound sculpture at an event at Village Underground, London featuring the likes of Ben UFO and MC Chunky aswell as many others, used the sound system of recycled Red Stripe cans to entertain the crowd.
